    Diplomatic Reception Honoring Ethiopia

On October 23, 2019, WFLS held its landmark diplomatic reception honoring Ethiopia with over 150 people in attendance.

The Society honored Ethiopia for its peacekeeping efforts in East Africa and for ending the border conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia following the signing of a joint declaration formally ending the border conflict and fully restoring full trade and diplomatic relations. Only weeks before the Diplomatic Reception, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation in East Africa, echoing the decision of WFLS.

The acting Legal Adviser Marik String introduced the honoree, and Ambassador Fitsum Arega accepted on behalf of his country.  The event took place at the Benjamin Franklin Room of the U.S. Department of State.  Portions of the night were reported on Ethiopian national TV.  The WFLS organizes this signature event in collaboration with the Department of State, and we are happy to continue this great tradition.
