International Aspects of Derivatives Regulation Under Dodd-Frank

On December 10, 2012, Jacqueline Mesa, Director of the Office of International Affairs of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, discussed regulatory reform in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis in a Washington Foreign Law Society event entitled “International Aspects of Derivatives Regulation Under Dodd-Frank.”  The event – which drew a diverse group of attendees from the private and public sectors, academia, as well as representatives of foreign governments – provided an overview of international consensus in regulatory reform through the G-20 Leaders Commitment as well as the importance of international harmonization in rule-making.  To date, the Commission has made substantial progress in finalizing Dodd-Frank’s swaps rules and is consulting and coordinating with foreign regulatory authorities to establish consistent international standards to promote effective and consistent global regulation.
